04.05.2023. Opening of the exhibition of Belarusian front-line artists "SPRING OF VICTORY" as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the People's Artist of Belarus Leonid Shchemelev

The beginning of May is the first warmth, gentle sun and fresh greenery. The beginning of May is a memory. For every Belarusian, this is the memory of a terrible war and a Great Victory. A memory that is forever inscribed in the history of our country, every city, every family.

People's Artist of Belarus Leonid Dmitrievich Shchemelev went through the whole war from beginning to end. He was awarded the medal "For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945."

The exhibition "Spring of Victory" presents the works of artists-veterans of the Great Patriotic War, outstanding masters of Russian fine art: Boris Arakcheev, Anton Barkhatkov, Viktor Gromyko, Adolf Gugel, Viktor Gavrilov, Peter Danelia, Evgeny Zaitsev, Alexander Kozlovsky, Nikolai Kondratiev, Abram Krol, Pavel Maslenikov, Nikolai Nazarenko, Nikolai Nazarchuk, Taras Porozhnyak, Mikhail Savitsky, Leonid Shchemelev and many other Belarusian artists walked thousands of kilometers along the roads of war, were injured, fought in partisan detachments.

These dramatic events left an indelible mark on the life and work of Belarusian masters, determined the stylistic characteristics and semantic content of their works – not only for the dramatic events of the Great Patriotic War, but also for the peaceful post-war decades. On the canvases there are images of partisans, Heroes of the Soviet Union, the piercing beauty of their native land. Front-line artists who defended our Motherland, together with all the people, brought the long-awaited Spring of Victory closer…

The exhibition presents works from the collections of the State Institution "Museum of the History of the City of Minsk" and the NGO "Belarusian Union of Artists".
