Leonid Shchemelev was one of the Heroes who brought the long-awaited Victory closer. People's Artist of Belarus L.D. Shchemelev went through the whole war from beginning to end. Participated in the Battle of the Dnieper, was seriously wounded near Mozyr. He fought as part of the 4th Kuban Cossack Corps of the 2nd Ukrainian Front. He was awarded the medal "For the victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945"
